GP? Psychiatrist? Psychologist?

I don't want people to think that there aren't a great many people in the general practice/mental health field.  There are and some of them I owe my life to.  I'm not so sure they'd want to be mentioned here but I think they know who they are.

Your first line of defense is your GP.  See him first, let him know what's going on.  Mine is wonderful and has stuck with me through all these years.  Encouraging me, prescribing for me and helping to refer me to others when he can.

Psychiatrists.  Third time was the charm for me.  If you meet a medical profession and you don't like him/her then don't go back, it's as simple as that.  I don't care if someone has told you the miracles this person has worked.  If the fit isn't there for you it's never going to be and to try to force it is for you to waste time in getting proper treatment.

The same goes with psychologists or therapists.  Just because they have a degree or training doesn't automatically make them qualified to help YOU.  There are so many other things involved.  If you don't feel comfortable with the person there is no way you are going to be able to bear your sole to them and that's what you need to do.  Are they an authority figure?  Not the right fit either.  No, you're not looking for someone who is your equal.  You are looking for someone you can have a conversation with, who is listening to you and not thinking about his own agenda or his next appointment.  He offers you solutions or at least points you in a path you  hadn't thought of before.  Remember he's there to help you not the other way around.

I've always given it 6 weeks to see how comfortable I am and if I'm not it's time to cut my loses and move on.  I'm not there to make them feel better about themselves and their abilities it's about what they can do for me.
